Why Is My AC Blowing Warm Air?
Warm air from your AC usually traces to a thermostat setting, airflow restriction, or refrigerant problem. A North Texas technician explains each cause.

When the supply registers in a North Texas home start pushing warm air in the middle of a 100°F afternoon, the cause is almost always one of five things: a thermostat setting, a restricted airflow path, a refrigerant problem, a failed outdoor unit, or leaking attic ductwork. This guide walks through each one in the order I check them on a real service call, so you know what is safe to look at yourself and when the system needs a gauge set and a licensed technician.
What does it actually mean when an AC blows warm air?
Warm air at the register means the refrigeration cycle is not removing heat from the air passing over the indoor coil — either because the cycle is not running, or because air is bypassing it. Your air conditioner does not create cold air; it moves heat from inside the house to the coil outside. Anything that interrupts that transfer — no power to the condenser, no refrigerant to carry the heat, no airflow across the coil — leaves the blower circulating room-temperature or hotter air.
Which causes should you check yourself first?
Start with the three checks that cost nothing and fix a surprising share of calls. First, confirm the thermostat is set to Cool and the fan is set to Auto, not On. With the fan on continuously, the blower keeps running between cooling cycles and pushes un-cooled air, which feels warm even when nothing is broken. Second, pull the air filter. A collapsed or clogged filter starves the indoor coil of airflow, the coil ices over, and the ice blocks what little airflow is left — warm air is the symptom. Third, check the breaker panel: most homes here have separate breakers for the indoor air handler and the outdoor condenser, and a tripped condenser breaker leaves the blower running with no cooling behind it.
When does warm air point to a refrigerant leak?
If the system runs constantly, the air is slightly cool but never cold, and the electric bill climbs, low refrigerant charge is the leading suspect. Refrigerant does not get used up — a low charge means it leaked out somewhere, usually at a coil joint or a rubbed-through line set. Ice on the copper suction line or on the indoor coil is the classic tell. Why do North Texas attics make this worse?
Most homes in Keller, Southlake, and the surrounding cities are slab-on-grade with every foot of ductwork run through an attic that hits 130–140°F on a July afternoon. A disconnected supply boot or a torn flex duct up there does not just lose cool air — it pulls superheated attic air into the supply stream. I have measured register temperatures 15 degrees warmer than the air leaving the coil purely because of duct leakage. If one room blows warm while the rest of the house cools, ducts are the first place I look.
What failure modes need a technician the same day?
Call for professional help when the outdoor unit hums but the fan does not spin (a failed capacitor or fan motor), when the breaker trips repeatedly (never keep resetting it — that is how compressors die), when you see ice anywhere on the system, or when the compressor short-cycles on and off every few minutes.
