Why Does My AC Short-Cycle?
Short-cycling means your AC starts and stops in bursts instead of running full cooling cycles. Here are the causes, from dirty coils to oversized systems.

Short-cycling is when your air conditioner turns on, runs for a few minutes, shuts off, and repeats — instead of running the long, steady cycles it was designed for. It is one of the most damaging patterns an AC can fall into, because the hardest moment in a compressor’s life is startup. A system that starts twenty times an hour ages years in a single Texas summer. Here is how I diagnose it in the field.
What counts as short-cycling?
A healthy cooling cycle in a North Texas July runs roughly ten to twenty minutes, and on 100°F-plus afternoons a properly sized system may barely shut off at all — that is normal and efficient. Short-cycling is cycles under five minutes, repeating back to back. If you hear the outdoor unit kick on, run briefly, and clunk off several times in a half hour while the house never quite cools, you are looking at short-cycling, not normal operation. A simple way to confirm it: sit near the thermostat with your phone’s stopwatch for half an hour and log every start and stop of the outdoor unit. Three or more starts inside thirty minutes, with runs under five minutes each, is short-cycling by any definition — and that log is genuinely useful to whoever diagnoses the system, because it shows whether the cutouts are regular (a control or thermostat pattern) or ragged (a pressure or electrical fault).
What are the most common causes?
In rough order of how often I find them on calls: a clogged air filter or dirty indoor coil freezing up, which trips the system off on a safety; a low refrigerant charge causing the low-pressure switch to cut the compressor; a failing run capacitor that lets the compressor start but not stay running; a thermostat mounted in a bad spot — in direct afternoon sun or right above a supply register, so it satisfies in minutes and calls again just as fast; and electrical faults like a pitted contactor. Each of these produces the same start-stop symptom, which is why guessing at parts is expensive and a systematic diagnosis pays for itself.
Can an oversized AC cause short-cycling?
Yes — and it is the one cause no repair fixes. An oversized system blasts the thermostat down to setpoint in a few minutes and shuts off before it has run long enough to pull humidity out of the air. The house feels cold but clammy, the equipment cycles constantly, and parts wear early. I see this most in homes where a previous contractor sized the replacement by matching the old unit’s tonnage — or bumping it up “to be safe” — instead of running a load calculation on the actual house. Slab-on-grade homes here with newer windows and added attic insulation often need less tonnage than the original builder installed, not more.
What damage does short-cycling do if you ignore it?
The failure modes stack up quietly. Every start draws inrush current several times the running load, so the compressor windings and capacitor cook. Oil circulation suffers because the compressor never runs long enough to move lubricant properly. Humidity control collapses, which in our climate means the house feels warmer at the same temperature and you compensate by lowering the setpoint — raising the bill. And if the root cause is a freezing coil, repeated freeze-thaw cycles can crack the coil itself. A short-cycling system left alone through a DFW summer very often becomes a dead-compressor call in August, when you least want one.

What should you do about it?
Change the filter and make sure supply registers are open — if the cycling continues, shut the system off and book a diagnostic rather than letting it hammer itself.
