For a North Texas summer, the settings that balance comfort and cost are 76–78°F while you are home, 3–5 degrees higher while you are away, and modest, gradual setbacks rather than big swings. Cranking the thermostat to 68 does not cool the house faster — a single-stage AC delivers cold air at exactly one rate, and a low setpoint just makes it run longer past the temperature you actually wanted. Why does the setpoint matter so much here?
Because the gap between inside and outside drives everything. Every degree cooler you hold the house against a 103°F afternoon adds meaningfully to runtime, and cooling runtime is the dominant line on an Oncor-delivered summer electric bill. A house held at 72 all season versus 77 with smart setbacks is a very different August statement — the exact difference depends on your home and rate plan, but the direction is not in question.
Should you set the temperature up when you leave?

Window coverings work on the load itself: in a DFW summer, west-facing glass turns into a radiant heater from mid-afternoon on, and closing blinds or solar shades on that exposure before the sun swings around measurably shortens the evening’s cooling runtimes.
