SEER2 is the efficiency rating for air conditioners and heat pumps: it measures how much cooling a system delivers per unit of electricity consumed over a simulated season, tested under external static pressure meant to mimic real ductwork. A higher SEER2 means less electricity for the same cooling — and in a climate that racks up as many cooling hours as Dallas–Fort Worth, the rating you choose shapes seven months of electric bills a year for the life of the system.

What does SEER2 actually measure?

Think of it as miles-per-gallon for cooling: total cooling output across a test season divided by total electricity input. The “2” matters — the older SEER test let equipment breathe through unrealistically easy duct conditions, and SEER2’s revised procedure applies higher external static pressure that better reflects a real attic duct system. The same physical unit scores lower on SEER2 than it did on SEER, so never compare a SEER number to a SEER2 number directly. Ratings are also lab values: a poorly installed system with leaky ducts and a sloppy refrigerant charge will never deliver its rated efficiency, which is why the installer matters as much as the sticker.

Why does the rating matter more in Texas than most states?

Two reasons. First, exposure: DFW runs one of the longest cooling seasons in the country, with 100°F-plus stretches where systems run nearly continuously — every point of efficiency gets multiplied across enormous runtime, so the payback on higher efficiency arrives faster here than in Ohio. Second, regulation: federal minimum efficiency standards are set higher for the Southeast and Southwest regions, Texas included, than for the North — so the entry point of what you are even allowed to install here is already elevated. How high up the SEER2 scale should you buy?

The framework: each tier up costs more in equipment and saves on every kilowatt-hour for 12–15 years, so the answer depends on runtime and horizon. High runtime — large homes, west-facing glass, long occupancy hours, plans to stay a decade — justifies climbing the scale. Modest runtime or a near-term move weakens the case. What are the failure modes of shopping by SEER2 alone?

Buying a high rating and installing it on leaky ducts — the lab number assumes duct performance your attic may not deliver. Comparing quotes where one lists SEER and another SEER2, which misstates the gap between bids. And letting a high rating excuse an oversized system: an efficient machine that short-cycles is still an uncomfortable, self-destructive machine. Rating is one input; sizing and installation quality decide whether you ever see it.

What other ratings share the label?

Two companions are worth reading on the same yellow EnergyGuide sticker. EER2 measures efficiency at a single hot-day condition rather than across a simulated season — and for a climate that parks above 95°F for weeks, it is arguably the more honest number for peak-summer operating cost, so compare it alongside SEER2 rather than ignoring it. For heat pumps, HSPF2 is the heating-season equivalent. A system that scores well on SEER2 but poorly on EER2 is tuned to shine in mild test conditions — exactly the conditions a Texas August does not provide.
