A smart thermostat is worth it when it automates discipline you do not already have: if your thermostat sits at one temperature all year, automated schedules and away-detection will genuinely cut runtime and bills; if you already run tight manual schedules, the hardware mostly buys convenience, remote access, and data rather than new savings. What does a smart thermostat actually do that a programmable one does not?

Three things with real value.
