Whole-House Air Purification Options, Compared
Media filters, electronic air cleaners, UV lights, and active purification each solve different problems. Here is how to match the technology to your air.

Whole-house air purification options fall into four families, and they solve different problems: high-efficiency media filtration captures particles; electronic air cleaners charge and collect finer particles; UV germicidal lights neutralize biological growth at the coil; and active purification technologies treat odors, VOCs, and airborne organisms in the living space. The most common buying mistake is treating them as interchangeable — matching the technology to your actual complaint is the whole game, and this comparison gives you the framework.
What problem are you actually trying to solve?
Name the symptom first. Dust on surfaces and visible allergens point to particle filtration. Allergy and asthma flare-ups point to finer filtration plus source control. Musty smells or a persistent “dirty sock” odor when the system runs point to biological growth on the coil — a UV problem, not a filter problem. Cooking, pet, and chemical odors point to active purification or carbon media. In North Texas the load is real on every front: long pollen seasons (cedar in winter, oak in spring, ragweed in fall), construction dust in the growth corridors, and seven-plus months of coil condensation that makes air handlers a hospitable place for microbial growth.
How do the four families actually compare?
A media filter cabinet — a 4- or 5-inch pleated filter in a dedicated housing — is the workhorse: meaningful particle capture with low airflow penalty, one change every 6–12 months, no electricity, no consumable cells. It is the upgrade we recommend most often, and it starts where the 1-inch filter conversation in when to change your HVAC air filter ends. Electronic air cleaners capture finer particles by charging them onto collector plates; they excel on smoke-scale particles but need their cells washed on schedule — a neglected one quietly becomes a very expensive empty box. UV germicidal lights mounted at the evaporator coil keep the coil and drain pan free of biological growth; they do not filter anything, but they attack the source of that damp-odor problem and keep the coil clean, which protects both air quality and efficiency. Active purification systems distribute cleaning agents (ions or oxidizers, depending on technology) through the ductwork to treat air and surfaces in the rooms themselves — the family that addresses odors and VOCs the others cannot. What are the failure modes of buying wrong?
The classics: cranking a 1-inch filter to maximum density and choking the blower (a filtration “upgrade” that creates the airflow failure chain); installing UV to solve a dust complaint it cannot touch; buying an ozone-generating device for an occupied home — ozone is a lung irritant, and we do not install ozone generators in living spaces; and stacking three technologies where the real problem was a duct leak pulling attic air into the return, which no purifier fixes. An honest IAQ assessment starts with the ducts and the envelope before it recommends hardware.
How do the options layer together in practice?
The best whole-house results usually come from a modest stack, not a single silver bullet: a media cabinet as the filtration backbone, UV at the coil to keep the wet components clean, and active purification added only when odors or sensitivities justify it. Layering in that order also sequences the spending sensibly — the media cabinet delivers the most improvement per dollar, so it goes first, and each addition addresses a symptom the previous layer demonstrably did not solve.
